President Maia Sandu of the Republic of Moldova addressed the detention of two Moldovan citizens in Moscow, expressing her regret over their situation. She made the remarks on June 26 during the NordNewsLIVE program.
Russian authorities claimed the Federal Security Service (FSS) detained the Moldovan citizens on suspicion of spying for Chisinau’s intelligence services—accusations officials have rejected as “speculative.”
“I regret that we’ve reached this situation where our people, who travel to the Russian Federation for business or family reasons, now face such problems. That’s why it was important for us to issue warnings. This doesn’t only affect Moldova—it’s happening to citizens from other countries as well,” said Sandu.

The head of state emphasized that Moldovan authorities continue to prioritize the safety of their citizens.
“We urge everyone to remain extremely vigilant to avoid finding themselves in such situations,” she added.
Her remarks came just one day after Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a travel alert for Russia on June 25, citing multiple recent incidents of harassment and intimidation targeting Moldovan citizens on Russian territory.
