Ion Chicu, a member of the “Alternativa” parliamentary faction, wants to initiate a draft decision to suspend and dismiss Maia Sandu from the office of President. The politician says the initiative comes amid recent scandals involving representatives of the ruling party.

To submit the initiative, the MP needs 34 votes. According to Article 89 of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, the suspension of the president from office requires the support of two-thirds of the elected MPs.

Under the same constitutional provisions, the proposal to suspend the president must be immediately brought to the head of state’s attention. The president may present explanations before Parliament regarding the allegations brought against them.

“If the proposal for suspension from office is approved, a referendum on the dismissal of the President shall be organized within no more than 30 days,” Article 89 (3) of the Constitution states.

The Presidential Administration has not yet commented on Ion Chicu’s announced initiative.
