President Maia Sandu met today, September 2, with the European Commissioner for Intergenerational Equity, Youth, Culture, and Sport, Glenn Micallef. The official’s visit took place in the context of signing the Agreement on Moldova’s accession to the “Creative Europe” program, which will allow artists and organizations from the Republic of Moldova, starting January 1, 2026, to access funding, partnerships, and European projects.
During the discussions, the officials highlighted the essential role of culture and sport in strengthening democratic resilience by promoting social cohesion and the fundamental values of peace, freedom, and democracy.
“The cultural sector in the Republic of Moldova has undergone significant transformations in recent years – from the creation of the National Culture Fund and increased wages for employees, to the renovation of many cultural institutions through the European Village Program and the opportunities offered by the National Program ‘Access to Culture 2025’.
President Maia Sandu emphasized that developing culture also supports tourism, by showcasing Moldova’s heritage and traditions while bringing benefits to the national economy,” according to the statement issued by the Presidency.

At the same time, the head of state reviewed the investments made over the past four years in promoting sport as a national priority, including infrastructure renovation and increased scholarships for performance athletes. For his part, Commissioner Micallef underlined that the European path will bring new development opportunities for this sector.
The talks reconfirmed the shared determination of the Republic of Moldova and the European Union to invest in people, culture, traditions, and sports performance, for the benefit of citizens and the country’s European future.
