Vulcanesti–Chisinau High-Voltage Line Over 75% Complete

Work on the high-voltage electric transmission line between Vulcanesti and Chisinau is progressing steadily, with more than half of the required poles already in place and the first kilometers of cable installed. The project is now approximately 76% complete, covering all phases—from design and equipment delivery to construction and installation.

The Ministry of Energy reported that workers have completed 462 of the planned 507 pole foundations, achieving a 91% progress rate. They have also assembled 334 poles and erected 274—over half of the total required. So far, crews have laid more than 12 kilometers of electrical cable, covering the first 5% of the 157-kilometer route.

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu visited the construction site today and highlighted the project’s strategic importance. He emphasized that the Vulcanesti–Chisinau power line will eliminate Moldova’s reliance on the Kuchurgan Power Plant, located in the Transnistrian region.

“This high-voltage line will allow Moldova to connect stably and securely to the European electricity grid via Romania,” said Junghietu. “It is a critical step toward strengthening the country’s energy independence and reducing the risks of supply disruptions.”

Modernization works at the Chisinau substation—an integral part of the project—have also reached 67% completion. Equipment installation is underway, with most civil and groundwork already finalized.

Once completed, the 157-kilometer Vulcanesti–Chisinau line will include over 500 transmission poles and approximately 1,500 kilometers of conductors. It will serve as a vital energy corridor between Moldova’s southern and central regions, crossing eight districts and 35 communities.

Depending on system conditions, the line will be able to transmit up to 630 MVA—enough to cover around 50% of Moldova’s energy needs during peak periods.

This project is of strategic importance for Moldova’s energy security. It will enable the direct transmission of electricity from Romania and other European markets to Chisinau without relying on infrastructure located in Transnistria.

Construction officially began in April 2024 as part of the Power System Development Project, funded by the World Bank Group. The project’s total budget is €61 million, with approximately €27 million allocated to the construction of the transmission line.
