What’s next after the date of the parliamentary elections has been set: when will we know who wants to be an MP?

The Moldovan Parliament has officially set September 28, 2025, next parliamentary elections. The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) will now take over responsibility for organizing and conducting the elections, Radio Free Europe reports.

Moldova holds parliamentary elections every four years. The current Parliament’s mandate will expire on July 11, 2025. The Constitution and Electoral Code require MPs to set the election date at least 70 days in advance. The law also mandates that elections will be no later than three months after the mandate expires or Parliament is dissolved. MPs set the election date by a majority vote.

Now that Parliament has chosen the date, the CEC must prepare the budget and timeline for the autumn elections. By mid-summer, the Commission will begin verifying voter lists and checking party eligibility.

The CEC will officially launch the election period through a formal decision. During this time, the Commission will assign tasks to local authorities, embassies, and other institutions and estimate election costs. It will also form electoral districts and councils and designate spaces for candidates to meet with voters closer to the campaign start.

Who Can Run for Parliament?

Voters will elect 101 MPs. Any Moldovan citizen who is 18 or older on election day and has the right to vote and run for office may become a candidate.

The CEC will open candidate nomination and registration 60 days before election day and close it 30 days before. Political parties may submit lists of 55 to 111 candidates. Electoral blocs—alliances of parties—must submit their candidate lists no later than 30 days before the nomination period begins.

Independent candidates may join the race if they collect 2,000 to 2,500 signatures from eligible supporters. Female independent candidates need to gather only 1,000 signatures.

After registration, the CEC will hold a lottery to determine each party’s or candidate’s position on the ballot.

Only those who pass the minimum vote threshold will enter Parliament:

  • 5% for political parties
  • 7% for electoral blocs
  • 2% for independent candidates

When Will the Campaign Start?

The official campaign period may begin no earlier than 30 days before election day and must end on Friday, September 26.

During this period, candidates can legally promote their platforms through posters, rallies, debates, and other legally permitted activities.
