When could the Republic of Moldova be placed under a state of emergency in the energy sector and what does it entail?

On December 16, the Prime Minister will go to Parliament to request a state of emergency in the energy sector. This request comes amid the potential energy crisis triggered by the halt of Russian gas supplies to Moldova.

At a press conference, the Prime Minister explained that the measure reflects the risk of disruptions to electricity and other energy supplies. As a result, the government could restrict energy exports and implement other measures to mitigate potential crisis situations.

“We are facing a challenging winter season with many risks, and I have asked Parliament to declare a state of emergency in the energy sector starting December 16. It will last until we resolve the gas supply situation for our citizens, including those in the Transnistrian region. It is also crucial for managing the crisis’ potential consequences and ensuring electricity supply. The government will continue to work tirelessly to minimize risks and impacts on our citizens. We must be prepared for any scenario, especially since the cold has been used as a weapon over the past three years,” said Prime Minister Recean.

The Prime Minister also announced that Energy Minister Victor Parlicov has resigned. The Prime Minister will take over the energy portfolio until a new minister is appointed.
