With USAID’s support! A Polish importer wants to double the amount of fruit purchased in Moldova

With USAID’s support, Dapol, a Polish importer from the Bronisze market, began collaborating with fruit producers from the Republic of Moldova. After starting with just a few truckloads of table grapes in 2022, Dapol imported over 700 tons of plums and grapes from Moldova in 2023.

This month, USAID’s Rural Competitiveness and Resilience Activity organized a mission for Dapol, during which the company’s representatives visited Moldovan orchards. Following the visit, Dapol announced plans to double its purchases of plums and grapes this season.

Imported products must have appropriate packaging and EU certifications and adhere to high-quality standards to comply with Polish requirements.

USAID remains committed to supporting Moldovan fruit producers in enhancing quality and expanding export markets. Moldovan fruits, prized for their quality and unique taste, are increasingly in demand within the European Union.

Moldova exported approximately 75 tons of cherries in 2021; by 2023, this number had soared to 2,600 tons. Apple exports grew from 1,000 tons in 2021 to 11,000 tons in 2023, while plum exports doubled, reaching 55,000 tons in 2023, up from 27,000 tons in 2021. Grape exports also rose significantly, with 25,000 tons exported in 2023, compared to 17,000 tons in 2021.

The Republic of Moldova’s strengthened position in the European market is also due to the EU’s decision to suspend taxes and import quotas on Moldovan products.
