128 km of the railway will be restored in the Republic of Moldova. The authorities will sign an agreement with the EBRD and the EU

The Republic of Moldova will sign an agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Commission on a grant and loan totaling 43 million euros for the rehabilitation of two railway sections, which will facilitate the transit of goods from Ukraine to the European Union through our country, said the Minister of Infrastructure and regional development Lilia Dabizha in the radio program “360 degrees”.

“A €23 million EBRD loan will be used to rehabilitate 128 kilometers, with a €20 million grant from the European Commission. We will sign this agreement. The money will be used to purchase the materials needed to restore this site. Our goal – is to shift the transport of heavy goods from road to rail to protect them. At the same time, we need to transfer the export of these goods to the railway. We need to modernize our railways before switching to the European gauge to increase the speed, ensure the safety of transportation and the wider use of railway transport,” Lilia Dabizha said.

Lilia Dabizha added that the restoration work will be completed in 2025. At the same time, a project is currently being implemented with the EBRD and the EIB to rehabilitate 108 kilometers of the railway track in the Bendery-Etulia-Giurgiulesti section.

The EBRD, the largest institutional investor in the Republic of Moldova, has provided more than 2 billion euros to 163 projects to date.
