23 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks: The message from the Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs to the American people

It’s been 23 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks, when Al-Qaeda terrorists struck the United States. Passenger planes with hundreds of civilians on board became weapons in the hands of Islamic terrorists. Nearly 3,000 people died in the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai PopÈ™oi, has shared a message for the American people on the social media platform X.

”On #September11, we honor the memory of the victims and reaffirm our commitment to peace. Terrorism has no place in our world. Together, we stand against violence and for a future built on unity and understanding.”

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the only people who knew a tragedy was about to unfold were those on the planes and the military, which was in the process of scrambling fighter jets following an initial alert. It was 08:46. In Manhattan, a group of firefighters was near the World Trade Center for a routine intervention when the first plane crashed into the North Tower. At 09:03 the world watched live as the second plane struck the South Tower.

The World Trade Center had previously experienced a bombing attack in 1993. President George W. Bush was thousands of kilometers away in Florida, attending a meeting with students. The image of his advisor whispering that a terrible accident had occurred in New York just four minutes after the first impact and the President’s stunned expression remain etched in history.

At 09:59, the South Tower collapsed in just 10 seconds. A fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania. On the site, rescue teams discovered a massive impact area. At 10:28, the North Tower, which had been the first to be hit, also collapsed.
