The Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova has announced that the national team has returned home after participating in the Special Olympics World Games held in Berlin from June 12th to June 26th. The highlight of the competition was Moldovan athlete Alexei Zanoga, who won the silver medal in the 200-meter freestyle swimming event.
The Republic of Moldova was represented at the Special Olympics World Games by a team of 20 athletes who competed in six sports disciplines: football, bocce, swimming, table tennis, athletics, and judo. The athletes were accompanied by eight coaches and technical staff.
The Moldovan athletes achieved the following results:
- Swimming: Alexei Zanoga – silver medal in the 200-meter freestyle, Nicoleta Volosciuc – 8th place;
- Unified Women’s Football: 7-person team – 4th place; Bocce: Tatiana Calpacci – 4th place; Athletics:
- Dimitrios Chian – 4th place in the 400-meter race, Valeria Sîrbu – 6th place in the 200-meter race;
- Judo: Alexandru Asarji – 5th place; Table Tennis: Sergiu Gustiuc – 6th place, Alina Diaconu – 4th place.

The Special Olympics World Games represent the largest sporting event dedicated to individuals with intellectual disabilities. The Special Olympics Moldova national team participated in the event with the financial support of the Ministry of Education and Research. The Ministry extends its congratulations to the athletes and coaches for their outstanding achievements.
