Touristic Chisinau: The Building that was built by the war prisoners

Chișinău has many beautiful places with a rich history that not all city residents are aware of. In a new edition of the project “Touristic Chișinău,” the tour guide Ion Ștefăniță tells the story of the history of the building located at 106 Columna Street in the capital.

“We are in the historical core of Chișinău, at the crossing point between Eugen Doga Street and 106 Columna Street. It is a national monument, included in the register of monuments. The history of this building began when the architect Gaschet sat down and designed this beautiful building in an eclectic style with Gothic and certain oriental elements. This house was constructed in 1853-1854, and in just one year, it found its place on the map of the old Chișinău. However, like other buildings during the course of World War II in 1941, when the scorched-earth technique was applied, this building also suffered. In the post-war period, it was rebuilt with the labor of prisoners of war. Today, it is classified as a historical and architectural monument and houses the Directorate of Economy and Tourism of the Chișinău City Hall,” says Ion Ștefăniță.
