The accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union is not just a political choice but the only way to protect our freedom, peace, and democracy. This is one of the messages conveyed by President Maia Sandu at the 78th UN General Assembly, as reported by IPN.
The head of state stated that Ukraine, Moldova, Europe, and the free world are facing external aggression against democratic values, and supporting Ukraine will guarantee peace in the region. “We firmly support Ukraine’s victory because when Ukraine is victorious, the free world is victorious. Now, more than ever, support for Ukraine must not wane. I urge you to continue supporting Ukraine,” said Maia Sandu, as quoted in a press release from the Presidency in ChiÈ™inău.
In her speech at the UN podium, the President mentioned that Moldova is not experiencing an armed conflict, but every day we must face hybrid attacks and corrupt criminals who aim to destabilize the country. “Their hybrid toolkit includes energy blackmail, support for separatism, cyberattacks, and disinformation campaigns. They have also attempted to overthrow our democratically elected government. But they have failed every time,” said the President.
At the same time, the head of state reiterated that, despite all obstacles, we have managed to maintain peace in the country, including in the Transnistrian region, where Russian troops are stationed illegally, and there are concerns about human rights violations. The President called for a peaceful resolution of all conflicts and the unconditional withdrawal of Russian forces from the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
Maia Sandu spoke about the role of the Republic of Moldova in maintaining security on the European continent and the commitment to European security, confirmed by hosting the Summit of the European Political Community. She also mentioned that all economic progress, security improvement actions, and the strengthening of our democracy are steps that bring us closer to EU accession.
