The Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova (JCM), as a member of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), is taking part in the annual #WeRemember campaign together with the WJC in the context of Holocaust Remembrance Day – January 27. The WeRemember campaign started on January 22 and runs during International Holocaust Remembrance Week, promoting the importance and awareness of Holocaust education.
The 2024 #WeRemember campaign with the tagline “Learn from the past, protect the future” encourages participants around the world to take a photo of themselves holding a sign with the words “We Remember” and then post their photos on social media using the hashtag #WeRemember, to spread the message of “never again”.
The participants who carried out such actions were Ursula von Leyden, Angela Merkel, the Pope of Rome, the Chelsea football team and the Borussia Dortmund football team, etc.

Why?
The Holocaust was the organized persecution and killing of 6 million Jews, along with other targeted groups, by the Nazis and their collaborators during World War II. Knowing about this history and understanding what led to the greatest tragedy of modern times can help prevent future genocides and acts of hatred based on religion, ethnicity or other differences.
With the number of survivors decreasing every year, it is our shared responsibility to preserve the memory of the victims and ensure that the past is not forgotten and history distorted.
Context
The past year has been a difficult one for many communities around the world. The rise of antisemitism and the increased spread of Holocaust denial, including online, have led to new threats that require urgent action.
On October 7, 2023, an unimaginable tragedy was imprinted in Israel’s history, leaving a deep mark on the entire nation. This day, known as “Black Saturday”, represents a manifestation of the antisemitic movement, causing shock throughout the world. In reflecting on this dark chapter of history, it is imperative to recognize the stark reality of the hatred and violence faced by the Jewish people.
Encouraging society to reflect on the lessons of the past can ensure that future generations develop the knowledge and skills to deal effectively with these challenges. The #WeRemember campaign is to remind the world what can happen when hate is allowed to fester and destroy lives and entire communities.
WeRemember in Moldova?
Unfortunately, few people know about the Holocaust in Moldova, and the denial and distortion, including in the public space and online, is worrying. According to the findings of the International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust, chaired by Elie Wiesel, approximately 300,000 Jews and thousands of Roma, as well as other groups, were exterminated in the Holocaust in Moldova. The Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova prepared a poster for the #WeRemember campaign that uses an image from the local history of mass deportations during the Holocaust in Moldova. The poster is now displayed in public transport stations, in means of transport, in educational institutions as well as on the social networks of the Jewish Community and its national and international partners.
How you can take part?
Prepare a photo with a sign with the words “We remember” and post it on instagram, facebook, twitter or tiktok. Tag @Comunitatea Evreiască din Moldova and @WJC so we can share it. This sends a message that we must learn from the past to protect the future.
