Norway has announced its intention to open an embassy in Chisinau, according to Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.
“Given the security situation in Europe, we need to refocus and reorganize our resources. Over the past year, we have increased the number of Norwegian diplomats in Kyiv, Bucharest, Vilnius, and other cities. For the first time, we are opening a representative office of the Norwegian diplomatic mission in Moldova,” Espen Barth Eide stated.
He emphasized that following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the influx of refugees, Norway has significantly increased its support to Moldova. Our country received NOK 420 million (about €37 million) in aid in 2022 and more than NOK 500 million in 2023. The Norwegian Foreign Ministry has assured that Moldova will continue to receive significant support from Norway in 2024.
“The opening of the embassy is a clear indication of our support during a crucial time for Moldova and Europe. Russia’s war against Ukraine threatens the security of the whole of Europe. There is no indication that the war is coming to a close. Both Ukraine and Moldova will require our assistance for many years to come,” Eide added.
