The main argument why the referendum is planned to be organized on the same day as the presidential election is that these elections usually have the highest turnout, President Maia Sandu said on Moldova 1 TV channel.
“The main argument is the turnout. A decision about holding the referendum will determine the future of the country for many years to come. This is an important decision. I want as many people as possible to take part in this referendum. We want the election to bring as many voters to the polls as possible. We know from experience that in presidential elections, we always have the highest level of participation compared to other elections. That’s the basic argument. Of course, we can remember that several resources will be saved, but the most important thing is that as many people as possible take part in these elections,” said Maia Sandu.
On Thursday, February 8, President Maia Sandu discussed the EU accession referendum with several parties. Earlier, the president discussed this topic with the press, opinion makers, civil society, youth organizations, and several Moldovan politicians.

After three years in power, Maia Sandu demanded that a republican referendum on EU accession be held simultaneously with the presidential election.
On December 28, 2023, the Parliament voted for an amendment to the bill to improve the electoral process. Thus, the republican referendum could be organized on the day of parliamentary, presidential, and local elections.
