On February 22nd in Chisinau, Environment Minister Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov and Catarina Bjorlin Hansen, the head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Moldova, came together to sign a significant Agreement on Grant (E5P) totaling 5.4 million euros. This grant, provided by development partners, aims to bolster waste management infrastructure in Moldova.
The E5P grant will be instrumental in co-financing various key projects, including the construction of a regional sanitary landfill in Donduseni adhering to European Union standards, incorporating sorting and disposal infrastructure. Additionally, it will support the establishment of transfer stations in Briceni and Edinet, along with the procurement of equipment essential for an integrated waste management system.
This financial injection complements a sovereign loan of 25 million euros extended by the EBRD to the Moldovan government. This loan forms part of a broader financial package, encompassing an additional loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and investment grants from various bilateral donors.

The E5P initiative, a multi-donor trust fund amounting to 242 million euros, was initiated by Sweden and operates across the Eastern Partnership region. Moldova’s share of the E5P fund stands at 50 million euros, including a one-million-euro contribution from Moldova itself. The European Union emerges as the largest contributor with 28.95 million euros, with support also coming from countries such as the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Sweden.
EBRD plays a pivotal role as an institutional investor in Moldova, having already invested over 2 billion euros through 160 projects, with a significant 52% directed towards sustainable infrastructure initiatives.
