Transnistria’s appeal for help will be considered by the State Duma of Russia on its merits, Konstantin Zatulin, first deputy chairman of the Duma committee on CIS affairs, told RIA Novosti.
He noted that the Duma will treat the appeal of representatives of the left-bank region of the Dniester with all respect, as always.
“The appeal, when it arrives, will be considered on its merits. I am not ready now to vouch for the Council of the State Duma, which will, of course, discuss everything on this matter, and of course, it will do so based on consultations with the president and the Russian Foreign Ministry,” Zatulin said.
A similar view was expressed by his colleague Viktor Vodolatsky.
“The appeal has just been received. We will consider it. We cannot do without the Security Council here. There is a whole complex of issues raised here. In any case, we are obliged to protect our citizens. Russian citizens should not suffer from the maniacal actions of [Moldovan President Maia] Sandu and her henchmen who want to destabilize the situation,” he said in a commentary for “Podiom.”

At the same time, Rbc.ru reported, citing the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry, that “protecting the interests of Transnistrian residents is one of Russia’s priorities, and all requests are always carefully considered by the relevant agencies.
A congress of deputies was held in Tiraspol on 28 February. The event voted on a resolution asking Russia for “protection” from alleged pressure from Chisinau and appealing to several international organizations for support.
Tiraspol is also turning to the UN, accusing the constitutional government of violating the rights of residents on the left bank of the Dniester. The self-proclaimed administration also wants the support of the participants in the 5+2 negotiations, the OSCE to influence Moldova’s leadership to resume talks on the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, and appeals to the CIS not to allow the conflict on the Dniester to escalate.
