Daily Briefing: How Do We Protect Our Personal Data, and How Does the Government Secure It?

In the Republic of Moldova, if you’re lucky, the state provides you with digital services. If not, you may discover that digitalisation has reached someone else, too. No appointment, no queues and hardly any obstacles.

The personal data of approximately 750,000 Moldovans has fallen into the hands of hackers. Names, dates of birth, information about relatives, education records, family doctors, vehicles and financial details were extracted from government systems during a large-scale cyberattack.

Digitalisation Minister Claudiu Nasui said there is no risk of Moldovans having money stolen directly from their bank accounts as a result of the attack. However, he urged citizens to remain cautious, warning that scammers could use the stolen information to trick people into handing over their money.

How can we protect our personal data? What should the authorities do following the massive cyberattack and the theft of sensitive information?

These are the questions we discuss in the latest edition of Daily briefing.
