USAID Administrator Samantha Power attended the International Development Society’s Annual Conference and stressed the importance of identifying new approaches to address development challenges around the world.
In her speech, the Power Administrator highlighted the necesitty of support for the agriculture in the Republic of Moldova following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the effects of the the ensuing influx of refugees, of the energy crisis and the disruption of logistics and transportation routes that affect exports.
USAID Moldova has invested in boosting the productivity of apple growers and in setting up cold stores, but with 98% of apple exports going to Russia, these businesses were in jeopardy.

Through USAID support and the promotion of Moldovan products to the European Commission and other international organizations, USAID partners have been able to connect Moldovan producers with economic agents in the Persian Gulf States, Malaysia, Bangladesh and North African countries, increasing Moldova’s export share to non-traditional markets from 20 tonnes of apples in 2021 to 4,000 tonnes of apples in the first quarter of 2022 alone.
