The European integration of the Republic of Moldova could become a strategic objective of the country, as stipulated in the Constitution. The draft has been published by Parliament.
“Reconfirming the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova, Declaring integration into the European Union a strategic objective of the Republic of Moldova,” the draft reads.
According to the document, the Constitution is to be supplemented with provisions according to which “The accession of the Republic of Moldova to the constituent treaties of the European Union, as well as the accession to the acts revising the constituent treaties of the European Union, shall be established by the Parliament by organic law” and “following accession, the provisions of the constituent treaties of the European Union, as well as other binding Community regulations, shall have priority over contrary provisions in domestic laws, subject to the provisions of the act of accession.”

On Monday, the Legislature is holding public consultations on changing the country’s Supreme Law. According to a Parliament’s press release, “the purpose of holding the constitutional referendum and amending the Constitution is to declare at the constitutional level the aspirations of European integration, to set the direction of orientation towards the European value area.”
