Education Ministry State Secretary Sergiu Gurin announces that Moldovan athletes who return with medals from the Paris Olympics will be honored. According to statements made by the official to Vocea Basarabiei, the bursaries will amount to 70,000 lei monthly. The state will pay bursaries for four years and index them annually according to the average salary in the economy.
Such payments are a first for Moldova, the official said. According to Sergiu Gurin, they will be higher than the allowances paid to athletes in Romania and Ukraine.
The authorities aim to prevent the “migration” of our athletes, a phenomenon caused by the low remuneration offered to champions in Moldova.
In addition to the bursaries, Moldova will award three million lei to athletes who bring home gold, 2.6 million lei to those who win silver, and two million lei to bronze medalists.
