In the 2018 elections for mayor of Chisinau, after coming second in the first round with 32.1%, Nastase won 52.57% of the total number of votes in the second round, defeating Ion Ceban (47.43%). However, on June 19, 2018, the elections were declared void because both candidates had broken the electoral silence on election day, contrary to the provisions of the Electoral Code. In 2019, after the constitutional crisis in the Republic of Moldova, which led to the departure of oligarchs Vlad Plahotniuc and Ilan Shor, the Chisinau Court of Appeal validated Andrei Nastase’s mandate, annulling the judgment issued by the Chisinau Court of Appeals that annulled the 2018 local elections.
