Former anti-corruption prosecutor Victoria Furtuna was officially registered as a candidate in the presidential race on September 24. The independent presidential candidate is a lawyer by profession. Furtuna was born on February 24, 1981, in Hincesti. She is married and has two children. She speaks Romanian and Russian.

Victoria Furtuna started her career in 2006 as a prosecutor in the Nisporeni District Prosecutor’s Office. Two years later, the authorities transferred her to the Prosecutor’s Office of Chisinau Municipality, Botanica sector. In 2019, Furtuna joined the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and began investigating high-profile cases. In 2021, the prosecutor tried her luck in the competition for the post of Prosecutor General after the suspension of Alexandr Stoianoglo from the post but was unsuccessful. In 2024, against the backdrop of a major scandal, she resigned from the PA. In a press briefing, she said she was leaving the system after allegedly being declared by the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) “a threat to national security.” She accused SIS of breaking the law by wanting to be an institution loyal to the government. Moreover, he went to court to ask Maia Sandu for damages of 1 million lei after the president allegedly made some statements that damaged her image.

Before this scandal, Furtuna attracted public attention as the prosecutor who accused former mayor Dorin Chirtoaca of corruption in the parking lots case and former transport minister Iurie Chirinciuc of influence peddling and abuse of office.

In the spring of this year, Victoria Furtuna announced the creation of the public association “Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” which aims to monitor and expose major corruption cases. A few months later, she announced her candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections, choosing not to join any Moldovan political party. Reports in the public space claimed that Furtuna had formed a “secret alliance” with fugitive Veaceslav Platon, the founder of the Fenix Moldova party.

According to her declaration of wealth and personal interests filed with the CEC, Furtunaa earned over 370,000 lei from the Prosecutor General’s Office and 240,000 lei from the company “SRL Promilton” in 2023. Victoria Furtuna obtained several impressive donations in 2023. These are 10,000 euros and 160,000 lei. For 2023, the former prosecutor also indicates an income of more than 80,000 lei, money received on her birthday. The Furtuna family owns a piece of inherited land, a 100 square meter house, where they live in a residential apartment, and a Skoda Superb model car, which they leased. The Furtunas also have debts of almost €43,000 and 84,000 lei.
