Sandu denounces fraud in the October 20 elections: “If the justice system does not wake up in the last hour, Moldova’s future for decades is in danger”

President Maia Sandu denounced an unprecedented attack on Moldova’s electoral process, alleging that significant fraud compromised the October 20 ballot. She urged institutions to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and reveal evidence of corruption, affirming that the elections would continue. Sandu emphasized that only Moldovans should decide the nation’s future, free from interference or theft.

The President called on state institutions to publicly disclose the evidence of fraud, hold those accountable, and prosecute those involved in vote-buying.

“Dear citizens, on October 20, 2024, attackers targeted our country’s freedom in an unprecedented way. State institutions documented extensive vote-buying networks that severely distorted the election results,” Sandu stated.

She highlighted how the justice system has consistently failed to address corruption and pursue major cases.

“Everyone knows what happened — except what was in the bag Dodon received from Plahotniuc. No one knows who stole one billion dollars from Moldova’s citizens. Our justice system ignored how Ilan Shor won elections in Orhei, Gagauzia, and other areas. Without the purchased votes, the outcome would differ, leaving no doubt about the referendum results. We would have achieved a clear victory in both the presidential election and the referendum,” Sandu continued.

The President also shared that state institutions had informed her about a large-scale vote-buying network.

“Some suggested rejecting the results and calling for a new vote, but no one can dismiss the genuine, patriotic votes of our citizens. In the first round of 2020, I received 480,000 votes; now, after four challenging years, 650,000 have placed their trust in me. We must not allow destabilizing forces to derail the nation. We’re heading into the runoff, once again relying on the people when Moldova’s future is at stake. We count on those who see that our country is under siege, who recognize that a Trojan Horse has entered our nation. If the justice system fails to act and ignores this assault, Moldova’s future risks long-term damage. Moldovans deserve to shape their country’s future without theft. Only your vote can safeguard the nation. Let’s protect Moldova— our home,” the President concluded.
