The National Police detained for 72 hours the leader of a criminal group within the criminal organization “SHOR.” The targeted person allegedly gave a woman from Floritoaia Noua, Ungheni rayon, 1,500 lei to persuade her to vote in favor of a certain candidate in the presidential elections and to vote “NO” in the referendum, but the latter denounced him.
To gather evidence, police officers, under the direction of the Ungheni District Prosecutor’s Office, carried out authorized searches at the home and premises of the leader, a 26-year-old man.
“As a result of the searches carried out, the law-enforcement officers detected and collected several relevant evidence of involvement in the commission of the crime of bribery: money means, several copies of citizens’ ID cards, lists of party members and sympathizers, information leaflets with slogans against the republican constitutional referendum, several SIM cards, mobile phones, laptops and a tablet with information relevant to the investigation.”

The police statement reported that authorities discovered lists of delegated observers inside and near polling stations. They were to receive payment for influencing voters’ choices.
They detained the suspect and opened a criminal case for electoral corruption. If proven guilty, the suspect could face a fine of up to 55,000 lei or a sentence of up to 5 years.
Police and prosecutors in Ungheni continue to investigate the case to establish all the circumstances.
