Mazeiks, Following Another Falsehood from Russia: “We Are Concerned About Persistent Attempts to Undermine Moldova’s Democracy”

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (RFIS) has accused Janis Mazeiks, the European Union Ambassador to Moldova, of orchestrating actions against Moldova’s opposition parties from behind the scenes. According to these claims, Mazeiks allegedly urged Chisinau authorities to open criminal cases against leaders of thePobedaBloc,Renaissance, andChanceparties and to remove the leadership of the Gagauz autonomy, including Governor Evghenia Gutul. However, the EU ambassador has dismissed these accusations as falsehoods.

The RFIS alleges that Mazeiks providesdetailed instructionsto the ruling PAS party on how Moldova’sso-called democracyshould function. Furthermore, the diplomat is accused of attempting to divide the left-wing opposition by creating rifts among leaders Igor Dodon, Vladimir Voronin, and Ion Ceban. The RFIS did not present any evidence to back these claims, which Mazeiks promptly refuted.

Responding with irony, Mazeiks stated: Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service is putting a lot of effort into disinformation. Their latest masterpiece, accusing the EU of dictating Moldova’s future, brightened my day. Thank you for the humor!”

He emphasized that the allegations are baseless and reiterated that the European Union operates transparently. Everyone knows that the EU is not Russia. We communicate openly and officially, without secrets or manipulation. These accusations are further proof of our effectiveness in supporting Moldova’s European path,” Mazeiks added.

He also pointed out that Russia’s attempts to destabilize Moldova are well-known: For us, this mention is a badge of honor, evidence that our work is recognized and yielding results.

The European Union has repeatedly condemned Russia’s involvement in Moldova’s democratic processes. In October, the EU sanctioned Evghenia Gutul and others connected to her for efforts to destabilize the country under Moscow’s guidance. While the RFIS offered no proof for its accusations, Russia’s interference in Moldova’s political landscape has been extensively documented through independent sources, including intercepts and investigative journalism.
