The Republic of Moldova will benefit from an EU €15.4 million grant to interconnect its electricity networks with Romania

Moldova will receive a €15.4 million grant to co-finance the 400-kV Balti-Suceava overhead power line, the second phase of the project connecting Moldova’s and Romania’s electricity networks.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean, EBRD Moldova Director Catarina Bjorlin Hansen, and Moldelectrica Acting Director General Sergiu Aparatu signed today’s grant agreement.

The EBRD’s support covers 20% of the project’s cost and will also fund the rehabilitation of Moldova’s national electricity transmission network by replacing outdated equipment.

Prime Minister Recean emphasized the importance of access to European energy markets and credited EU support with helping Moldova escape Russia’s energy blackmail and strengthen its energy security.

“Today, we have electricity and heating thanks to our partners and the government’s strategic actions over the past four years. These steps freed us from blackmail and dependency. This new agreement provides free financing for interconnection lines with Romania, ensuring independent electricity supply from the European market and eliminating future blackmail risks,” Recean stated.

EBRD Moldova Director Catarina Bjorlin Hansen highlighted the project’s role in diversifying Moldova’s energy sources. “This initiative will help Moldova build a secure and reliable electricity supply system,” she said.

The second phase of the Moldova-Romania electricity interconnection project has a total value of €77 million. EBRD and the European Investment Bank have already contributed €30.8 million, with completion expected by December 2027.
