(VIDEO) Moldova’s Non-Existent Debt or How Much Gazprom Wants Us to Pay

Gazprom is demanding that Moldovagaz pay a debt of over 700 million dollars. More than 400 million of this amount represents alleged arrears from Chisinau, while about 300 million are penalties.

Chisinau does not recognize the debt and, following an audit conducted in 2023 by specialists from Norway and the United Kingdom, announced that it only needs to pay 8.6 million. However, the analysis results did not satisfy Gazprom, and the Russian conglomerate still demands payment.

Pro-Russian politicians in Chisinau are also fueling speculations about the debt. They insist that the country has not paid its bill since the pro-European forces came to power. However, the audit showed that a significant portion of the arrears dates back to 1991 until 2002.

Since December 2022, Moldovan authorities have provided the entire volume of Russian gas supplied to the separatists on the left bank of the Dniester so they can purchase electricity from Cuciurgan at a reasonable price. At the end of 2024, Vadim Krasnoselski, the leader of Tiraspol, signed a decree stating that if blue fuel does not reach the region, the right bank of the Dniester will lose electricity.

As a result of the energy crisis in February 2025, the Republic of Moldova started purchasing electricity from alternative sources, including the European exchange. Thus, Moldova practically eliminated its energy dependence on Russia.
