Uncertainty Surrounds the Future of Diplomatic Relations Between Chisinau and Washington

The Biden administration nominated Kelly Adams-Smith as the U.S. Ambassador to Chisinau. The Trump administration is reportedly considering canceling her appointment.

According to the portal Podul.ro, diplomatic sources confirm that the blocking of the nomination is not a bureaucratic issue but a political one. Adams-Smith is affiliated with the Democratic Party and previously worked on former Vice President Kamala Harris’s team, a rival of Trump in the presidential race.

At the same time, former Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi claims that Washington has requested the urgent recall of Moldova’s ambassador to the U.S., Viorel Ursu. The PAS government made “irresponsible” statements regarding Donald Trump and the United States, which officials cited as the reason. Ulianovschi warned that such approaches are straining bilateral relations and harming Moldova’s interests.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chisinau denies any such request from the U.S. Moldovan officials, stating that they do not comment on “rumors spread with a political agenda” and that any decision of this kind would come through official channels.

In this context, some believe Ursu’s presence at an anti-Trump protest in Washington on March 2 might have contributed to the escalation. During the demonstration, held in support of Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky, participants displayed critical messages aimed at Trump.

The tense situation raises questions about the future of diplomatic relations between Chisinau and Washington.
