Maia Sandu in Paris: A more integrated European Union means a more stable future for all

During her visit to Paris, President Maia Sandu said that peace in Europe was built and maintained through strong alliances, and Moldova benefited from this collective effort. At the same time, everyone also saw how fragile peace is when it is taken for granted.

“Today, our continent is facing the most serious security threat in the last 80 years – a tragic moment in the history of Europe,” the head of state said at the news conference held together with her French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, IPN reports.

Maia Sandu said that peace does not mean surrender and is not a truce that only postpones aggression. Peace needs solid and credible guarantees.

“Ukraine needs guarantees. Europe needs guarantees. We all need guarantees so that the next truce is not just a prelude to another war,” noted the Moldovan official.

President Sandu said that each enlargement made Europe safer, more prosperous, more resilient. In her opinion, a more integrated and resilient European Union means a stronger economy, better infrastructure, a more stable future for all.

“Moldova became a candidate country during the French Presidency of the Council of the EU and France supported us in every step on the way. We do our work, we carry out ambitious reforms, we strengthen the rule of law, we fight corruption. We are changing Moldova for the better because joining the EU is not just a destination. It is the way to a stronger country,” stated Maia Sandu.

According to the official, no country builds its resilience alone. “When the war broke out, France, Germany and Romania launched the Moldova Support Platform, helping us to overcome crises, protect our peace and citizens and continue the course of reforms and European integration,” said the head of state.

The official also said that Moldova and France are building a partnership that brings real results for the citizens. The assistance focuses on ensuring Moldova’s energy security by diversifying fuel purchase sources, improving energy efficiency and investing in renewable energy.

“Together with the French Development Agency, we are signing today a €30 million agreement to improve energy efficiency in Moldova. This investment will reduce energy waste, lower costs and strengthen our energy independence,” said Maia Sandu.

The head of state noted that cooperation in the fields of security and defense is also solid. “Today we pledge to join forces in the fight against disinformation because, in today’s world, truth is as vital as security,” added President Sandu.
