Breaking News! Veaceslav Platon has been detained in the United Kingdom

Veaceslav Platon detained in the UK for extradition, Prosecutor General’s Office announces
On March 13, 2025, UK authorities informed Moldova’s Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) that they had detained Veaceslav Platon based on a request submitted on September 25, 2024.

According to the PG’s statement, Moldova’s prosecutors are in contact with British authorities to coordinate the necessary procedures for bringing Platon before the country’s legal institutions.

In February, anti-corruption prosecutors completed presenting the prosecution’s evidence in Platon’s case. He is accused of fraud and large-scale money laundering while managing and benefiting from several companies in an attempt to embezzle funds from Banca de Economii SA.

According to zdg.md, Platon faces charges in three ongoing criminal cases—two for large-scale fraud and one for bank card forgery. He is also a suspect in the “Laundromat” case.

In 2017, Platon received an 18-year sentence for his role in the banking fraud. However, prosecutors reopened the case in 2020, and shortly after, then-Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo requested his release. In May 2021, Chisinau Court acquitted him after prosecutors dropped the charges. That same year, in July, Platon left for London, where he has remained until now.

One fraud and money laundering case is under review at Chisinau Court of Appeal, while others are still under investigation. Canada included Platon on its sanctions list, and a Russian court convicted him in connection to the “Laundromat” case.
