In the context of Romania’s presidential runoff held on May 18, Moldovan President Maia Sandu was the first among international leaders to congratulate Nicusor Dan on his election win. The newly elected President of Romania secured victory with 53.60% of the vote, including a landslide 88% in Moldova’s 64 polling stations.
“The Republic of Moldova and Romania rely on each other — through good times and bad,” Maia Sandu wrote in a public message.
“I also congratulate my fellow Moldovans who hold Romanian citizenship, both at home and abroad, for once again being a powerful voice for freedom and democracy!” Sandu added. Referring to the diaspora’s decisive involvement, she said: “Thank you all for the impressive turnout. The world can see how powerful we are when we stand united!”
Following President Sandu’s message, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean also shared congratulatory notes.
“Congratulations, Nicusor Dan, on being elected President of Romania!” wrote Dorin Recean. “I thank all Moldovans with Romanian citizenship, in the country and abroad, who went to the polls and once again showed how strong we are when we unite for a European future, in peace and freedom.”

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu echoed the same spirit:
“Thank you, dear Moldovans with Romanian citizenship, both at home and abroad. We have proven that we are united and that our voice is strong. The record turnout shows how engaged our citizens are and how much we care about the future of Romania and the Republic of Moldova.”
He added, “Our hearts beat with love for the Romanian people and our shared European future across both banks of the Prut. Congratulations, Nicusor Dan! Congratulations, Romania! Together we are strong!”
Several prominent international leaders also recognized Nicusor Dan’s win. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, European Council President Antonio Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen all extended congratulations. French President Emmanuel Macron remarked, “Romanians chose democracy, the rule of law, and the European Union, despite numerous manipulation attempts.”
In an interview with Antena 3 CNN during the ballot counting, President-elect Nicusor Dan mentioned Moldova as one of his top foreign visit priorities.
“Emmanuel Macron supported me, and Maia Sandu — I believe her support was pivotal. I deeply appreciate the mobilization efforts of Romanians living in Moldova and especially those in the diaspora,” he said. “Brussels, Chisinau, Washington — we’ll prioritize based on urgency, but those are clearly among the first destinations.”
Nicusor Dan’s win signals a strong endorsement for Romania’s European trajectory — one that Moldova’s leadership openly celebrates and stands ready to support as both countries deepen bilateral ties.
