Siegfried Muresan, President of the European Parliament Delegation to the EU–Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, stated that Moldovan citizens understood the importance of Romania’s presidential election and turned out in record numbers to vote for the pro-European candidate.
“Thank you, Republic of Moldova! After Nicusor Dan’s victory, Romania will continue to support Moldova’s European integration as its main advocate. We thank the people of Moldova who recognized the significance of Romania’s presidential election and voted in record numbers for the pro-European candidate,” he wrote on Facebook.
Muresan welcomed 88% of the more than 158,000 Moldovan voters who chose Nicusor Dan as Romania’s president.
“After this election, Romania will soon have a stable, pro-European government in Bucharest that will support Moldova in its accession negotiations and in overcoming current challenges,” he added.

According to Muresan, Russia and its allies tried to derail Romania’s democratic electoral process, but those efforts failed.
“The Russian Federation attempted to influence last year’s presidential election in Moldova and this year’s election in Romania. It failed in both cases. We stood united and countered Russia’s destabilization efforts. I expect the same outcome in Moldova’s upcoming parliamentary elections,” said Siegfried Muresan.
According to Romania’s Central Electoral Bureau, Nicusor Dan won 53.61% of the vote in the May 18 presidential election, while his opponent, George Simion, received 46.39%.
