Moldova Marks Six Years Since Government Transition: Leaders Emphasize Progress Toward European Future

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu reaffirmed Moldova’s commitment to peace and security, urging citizens to work “shoulder to shoulder, unwaveringly” for a stable and united country. His message came as Moldova marked six years since a pivotal moment in its political history.

On June 8, 2019, 61 members of Parliament from the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), the Dignity and Truth Platform Party, and the Party of Socialists of Moldova unanimously voted to appoint Maia Sandu as Prime Minister.

President Maia Sandu reflected on the anniversary, calling it a victory over the “generalized fear in society, the mafia that had total control over state institutions, and a chronic lack of hope in the future.”

“When I said from the parliamentary tribune on June 8, 2019, ‘The dictator has fallen,’ I knew it was only the beginning of a long and difficult journey—to cleanse the state, modernize it, and build a European, sovereign, and free Moldova,” Sandu recalled. “The years that followed were full of regional and global crises, including a bloody war at our border. We made mistakes and faced disappointments, but always cared for the people and the country.”

She urged citizens not to forget how far Moldova has come: obtaining the EU candidate status, earning international respect, preserving peace in turbulent times, and ensuring freedom of speech and protest.

“Dear Moldovans, let’s remember what we achieved together—with courage and dignity—and stay united in our chosen direction. We still have a lot of work ahead; we must accelerate our development, but we must not change direction. Moldova is on the right path today,” emphasized Sandu.

The government led by Maia Sandu focused on key priorities: freeing the state from capture, strengthening institutional independence, reintegrating the economy, and improving the quality of life.

On the international front, the government committed to European integration and deepening cooperation with Romania, Ukraine, and other European partners.
