Romanian President Nicusor Dan: Moldova’s EU Accession Depends on a Credible Prime Minister

Romanian President Nicusor Dan emphasized that Moldova’s accession to the European Union largely depends on the credibility of the prime minister, who will engage with EU institutions. Speaking to journalists ahead of Moldova’s parliamentary elections in September, he expressed hope that Chisinau’s administration will remain firmly pro-European, while respecting that the final decision rests with Moldovan citizens.

President Dan praised the efforts of Moldova’s authorities on the European integration path and acknowledged that the government is mindful of the accession timeline. He highlighted Romania’s readiness to provide expertise and practical support, drawing on its own experience during its EU accession process two decades ago.

“The Republic of Moldova’s integration process heavily relies on the prime minister’s credibility when negotiating with EU bodies. Romania supports this process diplomatically—through the President, foreign ministers, and other officials—to ensure steady progress amid technical challenges,” Dan said.

He added, “Practically, Romania has gone through all 33 negotiation chapters and made many mistakes along the way. We stand ready to assist Moldova whenever requested.”

While he expressed his wish to see Moldova continue its pro-European course after the elections, Nicusor Dan also stressed his respect for Moldovan citizens’ right to determine their future through free and fair elections.

Moreover, the Romanian President assured that Romania will continue supporting Moldova across economic, commercial, energy, infrastructure, cultural, and academic sectors to advance its European integration.
