Moldova’s Democracy Resists Despite External Pressure, Says Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi told foreign journalists at a press conference that Moldova’s democracy has withstood unprecedented external interference and will continue to do so, even as the country prepares for upcoming parliamentary elections in the fall.

“Despite complex security and economic challenges caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine, and the difficulties we have overcome with the support of our citizens and international partners, we emerged victorious in last year’s presidential election and won the constitutional referendum on European integration,” Popsoi said.

He acknowledged that the margin of victory was not as large as desired, but emphasized that “in a democracy, the majority prevails.”

Regarding pre-election polls, Popsoi cautioned against taking all surveys at face value. “Not all polls reflect reality. Some are highly biased and aim to manipulate citizens. We remain confident that we enjoy the support of Moldovan citizens, both at home and abroad, to maintain our parliamentary majority and continue our European integration path,” he stated.

Popsoi also noted that while the government has not succeeded in everything, citizens recognize its efforts under extremely challenging circumstances and understand that opposition proposals offer little added value. “As in previous elections, citizens will make the right choice,” he concluded.

The press conference was held in the context of the official visit of Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, who met with Popsoi in Chisinau on the morning of August 21.
