“Moldova That Unites Us”: The Great National Assembly Square, Where the People Demanded Freedom and Independence

The Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau is regarded as the heart of the country—a symbolic public space where Moldova’s history has often been written. Located in the center of the capital, the square hosts key national events, public ceremonies, and civic gatherings.

It was here that citizens demanded freedom and independence, declared that they speak the Romanian language, and expressed their aspiration to join the European Union.

The Square has witnessed defining historical moments, such as the Great National Assembly of August 27, 1989, when Moldovans demanded that Romanian be recognized as the state language, as well as the national revival movement of the 1980s and the events of April 7, 2009.

Surrounding the square are major national landmarks, including the statue of Stephen the Great and Holy, the Monument to the Victims of Soviet Occupation, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Triumphal Arch.

The story of the square is also a story of the nation: every small step forward shapes Moldova’s future. With the hope that every citizen can rise and bring Moldova pride across the world, Realitatea Media Group has launched the campaign “Moldova That Unites Us.” The project shares stories of people who have made history, voices of ordinary citizens, insights into Moldova’s socio-political reality, and the symbols that Moldovans carry with them—from Lisbon to New York.
