The Republic of Moldova has expressed solidarity with Switzerland after the tragedy at the Crans-Montana ski resort. President Maia Sandu conveyed condolences to the families of the victims.

“My thoughts are with all those affected by the tragic fire in Crans-Montana. I extend my sincere condolences to the families of the victims. Moldova stands in solidarity with Switzerland,” President Sandu wrote.

Authorities report that no Moldovan citizens were among those affected by the explosion and fire that occurred at a venue in the Swiss resort on New Year’s Eve. According to preliminary data, the incident killed around 40 people and injured more than 110. Swiss authorities declared five days of national mourning.

Initial findings indicate that fireworks may have caused the fire. Local authorities stated that the incident appears to have been an accident and not a deliberate attack.
