Former Democratic Party leader Veaceslav Platon announced that he will appear as a witness at a court hearing in the case of former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo. In a message published on his Telegram channel, Platon said the hearing will take place on January 22 at 14:00 at the Chisinau Court, Buiucani headquarters.

In his public statement, Platon said he plans to present his own version of events. He claimed that two influential criminal groups in the Republic of Moldova cooperated to take control of the Prosecutors Office and to remove Alexandr Stoianoglo from office.

Platon also invited media representatives and members of the public to attend the hearing. He described the case as important for those who still value justice and fairness.

So far, the authorities and the individuals mentioned have not commented on Veaceslav Platon statements.

Context

Authorities detained Alexandr Stoianoglo on October 5, 2021, and charged him with abuse of office, passive corruption, and exceeding official powers. In February 2024, a first instance court acquitted him in the case related to the alleged abuse of office involving the payment of an allowance to former diplomat Nicolae Chitoroaga. Other criminal cases against Stoianoglo remain pending.

In 2023, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the Moldovan state violated Stoianoglo right to a fair trial when it suspended him from office without allowing him to challenge the decision.
