The panel of judges examining the “theft of the billion” case, in the episode concerning Vlad Plahotniuc, has approved the hearing of three additional witnesses requested by the defense. The decision was taken on February 12 during a court hearing attended by the defendant.
At the same hearing, the former leader of the Democratic Party was expected to make statements. However, he requested a postponement, citing health problems. The court granted the request.
Prosecutors asked that a doctor from the penitentiary examine Plahotniuc and issue a medical diagnosis.
“No document has been presented to prove the state of health; we consider the postponement unfounded,” the prosecutor stated.
Plahotniuc’s lawyer, Lucian Rogac, said that although it is not the defense’s responsibility to present supporting medical documents, they would comply with the court’s request.
“In fact, this task imposed on us by the court to present supporting documents is not the responsibility of the defense, but nevertheless we have complied with the court’s request and will submit the necessary documents,” the lawyer said.
Recently, Plahotniuc’s lawyers requested the hearing of 48 additional witnesses, after the court had previously accepted only 27 out of the 164 initially proposed by the defense.
