The National Bureau of Statistics of Moldova (BNS) revised the population data with usual residence as of January 1, 2024 (final data) and January 1, 2025 (preliminary data), using results from the 2024 Population and Housing Census.
The BNS recalculated the population in line with the 2026 Major Revision Calendar for statistical data dissemination.
The institution estimated the population with usual residence by adding the annual number of live births to the 2024 census data and subtracting the number of deaths. It also included net internal migration and de facto net international migration, based on state border crossing records provided by the General Inspectorate of Border Police of Moldova, consistent with usual residence recorded in the 2024 census. The Public Services Agency of Moldova supplied data on births, deaths, and internal migration.
The updated population data are available by sex, age groups, area of residence, and territorial profile at district, city (municipality), and village (commune) levels. The BNS published the data in Excel tables on its official website under: Statistics by domains / Population and demographic processes / Population / Excel tables.
Authorities stated that they will continue retrospective recalculations of statistical data based on the 2024 census. Further information on the revision process is available in the Revision Calendar on the BNS website.
The BNS will release preliminary data on the population with usual residence as of January 1, 2026, on June 5, 2026, following the Dissemination Calendar.
