The Government of the Republic of Moldova will not request the lifting of the state of emergency following Tuesday evening’s tensions between the United States and Iran. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu made the announcement at the start of the Cabinet meeting.

The head of the Executive believes that international markets remain volatile and are still reacting to developments in the Middle East. He stated that he will go to Parliament after Easter.

“We must acknowledge, unfortunately, that reality has changed, and once again not in a positive direction. The situation on external markets remains extremely volatile. We all followed closely what happened overnight, especially after the statements of the American president. Yesterday, the price of oil reached 115 dollars per barrel. Estimates indicated a possible increase toward 150 dollars or even higher.

During the night, a ceasefire between the United States and Iran was announced, but the risks remain very high. Markets reacted. This morning, we observed that the price per barrel decreased, but not significantly. Therefore, markets are waiting to see what comes next,” Alexandru Munteanu explained.

Government representatives are already discussing the measures applied under the state of emergency with parliamentary factions. The Prime Minister announced last week that he will present himself in Parliament on April 9 to request the repeal of the state of emergency in the energy sector.

Authorities introduced the measure in response to the bombing and disconnection of the Isaccea–Vulcanesti power line by Russian troops. They also cited rising fuel prices linked to the war in the Middle East as a reason for the decision.
