The Government of the Republic of Moldova has approved a draft decision granting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova central responsibility for promoting economic diplomacy abroad.
Under the new framework, the MFA will coordinate the secondment of diplomats specialized in trade and economic affairs to diplomatic missions and consular offices.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi stated that the reform aims to build a strategic system of economic diplomacy under MFA’s coordination. The initiative seeks to strengthen the state’s capacity to promote trade and investment interests abroad, align regulations with European best practices, ensure policy coherence, and improve the use of human resources.
“This process includes clarifying institutional competences and eliminating fragmentation,” Popsoi said, adding that MFA’s coordinating role will not exclude the involvement of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization and other institutions.
He emphasized that the MDED will continue to delegate diplomats specialized in economic affairs and remain actively involved in promoting external economic interests.
The government decision will enter into force one month after its publication in the Official Journal of Moldova.
