Maia Sandu announced that she is visiting Ukraine, where she will hold talks with her counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and take part in events marking 40 years since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

She said she will travel to Kyiv and Chernobyl to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their health or lives to protect Europe from an even greater tragedy.

In her message, Maia Sandu stressed that the 1986 disaster showed that such events know no borders and highlighted the importance of international solidarity. She noted that the protective arch built over the contaminated reactor proves that countries can achieve extraordinary results when they act together.

The president also emphasized that the lessons of Chernobyl remain relevant in today’s regional security context. She stated that Europe needs the same unity and determination to protect peace.
