Chisinau is preparing to welcome a new landmark in its sporting landscape with the official opening of the National Tennis Center on May 23. The project, initiated by businessman Ceslav Ciuhrii, is positioned as one of the most modern tennis facilities in Eastern Europe and a significant step forward for the development of tennis in Moldova.

A project focused on long-term tennis development

The National Tennis Center has been designed as part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s tennis ecosystem, with a clear emphasis on youth development, structured training programs, and access to high-quality infrastructure.

According to Ciuhrii, the goal of the project goes beyond building sports facilities. It is about creating conditions where young athletes can develop consistently and compete at an international level.

He has repeatedly emphasized that modern infrastructure is the foundation for future performance, particularly in countries where sports development is still evolving.

“These courts and this modern infrastructure are not just surfaces and lighting systems. They are the foundation for developing a new generation of tennis players who can represent Moldova internationally,” Ciuhrii noted ahead of the opening.

International tennis stars to attend opening ceremony

The inauguration on May 23 is expected to become one of the most high-profile tennis events ever hosted in Moldova.

The ceremony will feature appearances by two global tennis figures: Simona Halep and Juan Martín del Potro, underscoring the international attention surrounding the project.

Moldova’s top tennis player Radu Albot will also take part in the event, adding a strong national dimension to the opening.

Exhibition match to headline the inauguration

A special exhibition match will be played as part of the opening program, featuring mixed teams: Halep and Albot will face Del Potro and Lia Belibova in a showcase designed to combine competitive tennis with a celebratory atmosphere for the public.

A milestone for Moldovan tennis

The National Tennis Center is located in Chisinau at Str. Spiru Haret 1, in the area of Satul German. The facility introduces new training and development opportunities for young players and is expected to become a key hub for tennis activity in Moldova.

Beyond its sporting function, the project is seen as part of a wider effort to raise the profile of Moldovan tennis internationally and create a structured pathway for emerging talent.

With its opening, the center marks not just the launch of a new sports venue, but a broader investment in the future of tennis in Moldova — from grassroots development to international competition.
