President Maia Sandu said she is not preparing Prime Minister Dorin Recean for a potential presidential candidacy. She made the remarks during the “În Profunzime” programme on Pro TV, as cited by NewsMaker.

“I’m not preparing Dorin Recean, and I don’t think he lets anyone prepare him. Everyone decides for themselves,” Sandu said.

Asked whether a future presidential bid by either Dorin Recean or former Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu—both appointed as special presidential envoys at the end of 2025—is being considered for the next presidential election, Sandu replied: “No. At least so far, it has not been discussed.”

The president was also asked whether she would consider becoming prime minister after completing her second presidential term. Sandu said she remains focused on fulfilling the objectives of her current mandate and is not thinking about what she will do afterward.

“I am not thinking about what I will do afterward. I still have more than two years left in this mandate, and there are many things I want and need to accomplish because I promised them to our citizens. First of all, we need to restore order in state-owned enterprises, and this must become a government priority over the next six months. What happened there is absolutely unacceptable and discredits our efforts in many areas.”

She added that she intends to continue contributing to Moldova’s goal of becoming a member of the European Union.

According to Article 80 of Moldova’s Constitution, the same person cannot serve as president for more than two consecutive terms. As a result, Sandu will not be eligible to run in the next presidential election, currently expected to take place in 2028.
