Deputies of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia have accepted the resignation of Nicolai Ormanji as acting speaker of the regional legislature in Comrat. Following the vote, the session was chaired by Deputy Speaker Gheorghe Leiciu.

The agenda also included the election of a new speaker, according to IPN’s correspondent in Gagauzia. Two candidates were nominated: Deputy Speaker Gheorghe Leiciu and Valentin Gaidarji. The latter had previously proposed an alternative document to the compromise agreement negotiated with Chisinau, which was intended to help resolve Gagauzia’s electoral crisis.

Following the vote, Gaidarji was elected speaker of the People’s Assembly with the support of 11 deputies, local outlet Nokta reported.

Ormanji resigned amid the prolonged institutional crisis within the People’s Assembly. He had previously argued that the legislature’s work needed to be unblocked and that the eighth legislative term should be formally legitimized through the adoption of a temporary electoral regulation negotiated between Comrat and Chisinau.

However, deputies rejected the compromise document, which was intended to regulate the organization of the 2026 regional elections in Gagauzia.
