Moldova’s newly appointed acting Prime Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu has issued his first public statement following his appointment, saying he accepted the responsibility “with honor and full seriousness” and thanking President Maia Sandu for her confidence.
“During this period, my priority will be to ensure the continuity of the Government’s work, maintain institutional stability, and promote the decisions needed in the interests of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova,” Osmochescu wrote.
He added that, together with the government team, he would continue working to fulfill the commitments already undertaken.
President Sandu appointed Osmochescu as acting prime minister on Tuesday, July 7, following the resignation of Alexandru Munteanu.
Munteanu announced his resignation on July 3, saying he could no longer carry out his mandate in accordance with his principles and convictions.
Following the resignation, Sandu said the government’s reform agenda had been challenging and noted that, although Munteanu was “a good person” with “the best intentions,” she had expected greater involvement in advancing and explaining key reforms.
The president is expected to hold consultations with parliamentary parties later this week to identify a candidate for the position of prime minister. The exact date of the consultations has not yet been announced.
