Former Prime Minister and MP Ion Chicu announced that he may formally register a motion to suspend President Maia Sandu at the first plenary sitting of the next parliamentary session. Speaking to the press, Chicu said he intends to hold public consultations on the initiative before submitting it.
The draft proposal has already been published on the official website of the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova (PDCM). The party accuses President Sandu of usurping state power, undermining Moldova’s sovereignty, violating human rights, and engaging in conflicts of interest.
The Presidential Administration rejected the accusations, stating that the initiative is a constitutional right of members of Parliament.
“Initiating such a procedure is a right provided by the Constitution, and Parliament will decide in accordance with the law. The President holds a mandate entrusted by the citizens, which she fulfills with full responsibility,” the Presidential Administration’s press service said.
Chicu first announced on July 20 that he intended to seek Maia Sandu’s suspension and removal from office, arguing that the initiative was prompted by a series of recent scandals involving representatives of the ruling party.
Under Moldovan law, the proposal must be signed by at least 34 MPs before it can be formally submitted. According to Article 89 of the Constitution, the suspension of the President requires the support of two-thirds of Parliament’s members.
The Constitution also stipulates that the President must be informed of the proposal without delay and has the right to present explanations before Parliament regarding the allegations made against them.
