Politician Fiodor Gagauz, who has announced his intention to run for the position of Bashkan of Gagauzia, says he is holding discussions with leaders of several political parties to secure support for his candidacy as an independent.
Speaking on the “Focus” program on Laf.md, Gagauz argued that an independent Bashkan would be better positioned to work with both central authorities and political parties.
“The Bashkan represents the interests of citizens as well as the interests of different political parties. That is why an independent Bashkan will be more flexible in communicating with the Government, Parliament, and political parties in order to find solutions,” he said.
Gagauz stated that he plans to continue consultations with politicians from across the political spectrum to gain their endorsement as an independent candidate, saying such support would lay the foundation for effective cooperation in all areas.
He also stressed that relations between Comrat and Chisinau should enter a new phase based on dialogue and cooperation.
“There must be constructive dialogue in order to find solutions to existing problems. The attitude of the central authorities is also very important. Gagauzia is part of the country, and there should no longer be divisions into ‘whites,’ ‘reds,’ or any other camps. We need consolidated decisions. It is essential that the law remains the foundation of our actions and that constructive relations help develop both the region and the country,” he said.
The politician also agreed with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan’s recent assessment that Gagauzia’s economic and development potential has not yet been fully utilized.
“We have enormous potential and opportunities that can contribute to the development of both the region and the country. The important thing is not to create conflicts that prevent us from realizing this potential. We are one country, and a strong region means a strong country,” the former MP concluded.
